Phoenix's Oma (Grandma)!!! Phoenix's Oma visited our classroom today and brought a number of her favorite books to share with the class - many of them, "how to" books! She discussed her passion for reading, and how books entertain her and teach her new things daily. Thanks "Oma" for being our mystery reader today!

Today's Mystery Reader was . . . Rachel's Mom!!! Rachel's mom was our very first mystery reader! She visited our classroom today and read the book, Jumanji, by Chris Van Allsburg. I'm sure most, if not all of you know of the book or the movie, but if for some reason you don't - be sure to ask your third grader all about the adventures of Peter and Judy! It was one of my favorite books growing up. Thanks Mrs. Pahl for being our mystery reader today! Not only did we have our first mystery reader today, but we also celebrated Valentine's Day with a PARTY this afternoon (Bryce, we missed you)!!!! A big thank you to all our parent volunteers who made the afternoon extra special - Mrs. Achille, Mrs. Pahl, Mrs. Rychcik, and Mr. Thayer! Students passed out Valentine's Day cards, and had the opportunity to frost some cupcakes, play some bingo, and make Valentine's cards - what a day!! And finally, I leave you with a picture of this little heartbreaker . . . Happy Valentine's Day from Leo!!! Mrs. Peek sent me this adorable picture today, so I of course had to share it with all of you - enjoy!
A sad day today at VES - students had their final Science Lab with Mrs. Bye today. She is retiring at the end of the week and moving out to the west coast to be closer to her family. We've learned so much from Mrs. Bye and her awesome science lessons, and will miss her immensely! We wish you the best of luck! Christine Abelseth will take over as the new science lab Teaching Assistant after February break. Miss Abelseth student taught in both Mrs. Hamlin and Mr. Burns' classrooms and currently works in Kids' Club - WELCOME!!!
Konnichi wa (hello)!!! I almost forgot to post the pics below of your third graders hard at work yesterday afternoon! Together with their partners in Ms. Newkirk's class, students read Time For Kids, Destination JAPAN, and learned all about Japan, Japanese culture, and a day in the life of a 10-year old Japanese boy. As you know, we're learning all about the continent of Asia! Be sure to ask your third graders how their lives compare to the lives of children in Japan! Sayonara (say-yoh-nah-rah) (goodbye)! Okay, maybe not a snow day, but an early dismissal thanks to the weather! It's rare to see an empty classroom with chairs up @ 11:35 AM!!! Enjoy the snow and stay safe! ![]() This morning in class, we talked a lot about the Underground Railroad, as part of Black History Month. We read this amazingly beautiful WORDLESS story, titled Unspoken, by Henry Cole. It's about a young girl who discovers a runaway slave in her family's barn. Be sure to ask your third grader all about the story. They did a wonderful job making inferences about what was happening based solely on the pictures! And finally, if you happen to be roaming the halls of VES, be sure to check your 3rd grader's Waterlilly artwork! Mrs. Vitelli has them featured in the wing outside of the main office!!! Great work! Anthony!!! Anthony turned 9-years old today! Hope you had a great day! ![]() Yesterday, we had the awesome opportunity to spend the day with Chance Herzog in our classroom. Chance is a therapy dog who spends his days roaming the halls and classrooms of VES. A big thank you to Lisa Herzog for giving us Chance for the day! Happy Monday! I hope you all had a nice weekend. :) From what I heard in our morning meeting this morning, it was quite busy - ski trips, basketball games, birthday parties, soccer games - holy cow, I'm exhausted just writing about it! Hopefully the week is a bit more relaxing for you.
Ask most students what they think of when you mention the month of February, and 9 times out of 10 they'll say, "Valentine's Day!" And, they're right! But the month of February isn't only a time to proudly display shades of reds and pinks - it's also a time to celebrate Black History! Over the course of this month in class, we'll be discussing the achievements of the African-American population, and the historic events from 1915, the year slavery was abolished (ended) in the US. For more information on Black HIstory Month, click the green link above, or here for a short video from Brainpop! |
