Whoa, we had a busy day today in 3rd grade! :) ![]() First things first - a BIG HAPPY BIRTHDAY shout-out to Aidan, who joined the 9-year olds club today!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! Moving on . . . So this afternoon, students learned all about Brussels Sprouts as part of the Voorheesville Farm to School Initiative's "Good Eats" healthy snack program! They also got the chance to pull the leaves of sprouts, which will be baked with olive oil and sea salt and returned to our classroom next week as Brussels Sprout chips - yummmmmmy! :) Some third graders were even brave enough to eat a raw brussels sprout leaf... or two or three! Did they like it? Be sure to ask your child tonight! A big thank you to Mrs. Wight and Mrs. Lawson for helping out today! For more information visit Voorheesville F2S! Finally, students had the opportunity today to preview the Scholastic Book Fair which begins after school on Tuesday next week. They checked out some new books and filled out wish lists (pictures are posted below)! So, parents - be prepared to spend some $$$. :) Enjoy your evening!

![]() I know you're probably thinking, "what is Mr. P. talking about?! Dancing mice from OUTER SPACE?!" I assure you, the dancing mice are real and they're your third graders!!! Ahhhhhhhh! Last week, our Supplemental special changed from Art to T.A.D.. Students have been working hard with Mrs. Beauregard and Dr. Morgan on The Mice From Outer Space, A Musical Play For Young Voices, by Teresa Jennings. I got a sneak peak this afternoon, and they look and sound great! Students will perform the musical when T.A.D. ends in March. There will also be some special guests playing different characters, so be on the lookout for them! :) Check him out . . . Jack's mom sent me this picture of Jack practicing his multiplication facts this morning before school!!! I LOVE it!
Happy Monday! I hope you're staying warm and avoiding the roads. They're pretty icy, so please stay safe if you have to venture out. We're just about finished with our Persuasive Writing Unit. It's been about a week since students had time to work on their persuasive letters. Today, we spent about 45-minutes in the computer lab where students had the opportunity to write, edit, and revise their letters. I'm super excited to send these home (hopefully by Friday) so you can be persuaded by your third grader's hard work! Below are some pictures of them typing away today! Today in Social Studies, we left Australia with Ms. Newkirk's class and traveled to... ASIA, specifically, Ancient China!!! Because our plane was delayed, we landed in China later than expected so students only had a short time to explore. Have no fear - we have 2 more weeks of exploration! A hugeeeeeee shout-out to everyone who participated in tonight's VES Talent Show, which raised more than $1,600 for Make-A-Wish - how awesome is that?! Hopefully you had a chance to check it out with your families because it was truly a great night! Bridget, Bryce, Michael, Jimmy, Ella, Renata, Sophie, Arianna, and Abby - you were AMAZING! I'm so incredibly proud of you all for having the courage to perform in front of so many people!!! Have a great weekend!! Oh, and a BIG Happy Birthday to . . . Abby!!!
I hope you had a great birthday! Finally, I leave you with these adorable pictures of Mrs. Peek's son, Leo! She sent our class a beautiful card with his handsome face on the front & back - enjoy! (We attempted a SKYPE session with her today, but had some technical difficulties. We're hoping to have it fixed by next week!) Happy Wednesday to you all! Just a friendly reminder that book orders for the month of January are due by Friday (I extended the deadline by 2 days). You can send in a check and order form with your third grader, or you can order online at Scholastic. In case you forgot, our online classroom activation code is GW9X6. We've spent A LOT of time in math the past couple of days reviewing everything we've learned in geometry up to this point. As you know, third graders have a quiz tomorrow (Thursday). Based on how they did today, I'm confident they will all do grrrrrrrrreat! :) I know I've mentioned this before, but please make sure you're practicing your child's multiplication flashcards with them as much as possible at home. Students need to know these facts fluently! On Friday, we will begin our X7 facts. Okay, moving on . . . . . . to Australia!!! It's hard to believe that we're finishing up our unit on Australia! Today in Social Studies, we finished up our study guides, and used flashcards about Australia to remember key terms that will be on the quiz on Friday. I was so impressed (but not surprised) at how well your third graders knew their Australia facts!!! Once they take their Australia quiz, they'll spend some time researching an animal of their choice from Australia, and then it's off to China - so, get those passports ready! Below are some pics of your kiddos studying their flashcards - enjoy! Finally, it's no surprise to anyone here in the Capital District that the cold weather has arrived! Please make sure that your child is dressed appropriately for recess, and has all the necessities - boots, snow pants, gloves, a hat, and winter jacket. :) ![]() You all know how much I love my dog, Pax! He got groomed (hairs cut, nails clipped, bathed, etc.) today, so I of course had to share this handsome picture of him! :) "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." I hope you're all enjoying the long weekend. Last week, students began to learn more about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. They had wonderful discussions about his dream for equality, and talked a lot about how courageous he was.
On Friday, students read some literature about Dr. KIng. We talked a lot about sequencing and the timeline of events that made up Dr. King's life. On Tuesday, we'll be discussing Dr. King some more and watch a movie about him on www.brainpopjr.com. Students will then brainstorm ideas about how we can follow in his footsteps and make the world more peaceful. Enjoy the weekend! :) Mr. P So, today was our whole class birthday celebration and it was a craaaaaaaaaaazy fun time! I unfortunately missed the first part of it because I was finishing up my reading assessments, but when I walked in - PARTY! A HUGE thank you to all the parents who helped make the birthday celebration a success - Mrs. Gardner, Mrs. Kelly, Mrs. Beauregard, and Mrs. Longden. Students enjoyed cupcakes, cookies, goody bags, a fun snowflake activity, AND a dance party (thanks Mrs. Beauregard for the music!) - WOOOOO-HOOOOO!!! Be sure to check out the pictures below (thanks Mrs. Kelly for sending the pictures my way), and the amazing hats students made to celebrate their big day! HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our 21 third graders, who in my opinion, are simply the best!!! Mr. P I hope you're all enjoying your snowy Wednesday! :) Am I the only person who had no idea that we were expecting snow last night? I was SHOCKED when I received a text message this morning informing me of a 2-hour delay @ VES - shocked, but also excited to sleep in for an extra hour! I was out of the classroom for much of the day on Monday, and will be again on Friday afternoon. Have no fear - we have a WONDERFUL substitute in our classroom! :) (and, I'll be back in time for our Whole Class Birthday Celebration on Friday afternoon!) I'm working with each of your children individually to see how much they've grown as readers since the beginning of the school year. It's so encouraging and exciting to see the gains they've made - you should all be very proud! Please continue to read with them for at least 20 minutes each night! We are just about finished with our Geometry unit in math. Today, students had some fun with tangrams! Tangrams are seven piece puzzles made from cutting a square into specific geometric shapes. The first tangrams came from ancient China, and storytellers used the tangram pieces to create moving illustrations for their tales. Be sure to ask your third grader all about them! Mr. P To all the parents who attended tonight’s meet and greet at VES, thank you! It was a pleasure meeting all of you and learning something new about your child! :) For those of you who couldn’t attend, I’ll be sending home a folder with your child tomorrow with my contact information as well as information about our classroom. There is also a short parent survey I would like you to fill out. Once completed, please return it to school in your child’s take-home folder. This survey will help to make an even stronger parent-teacher partnership in your child’s education. Thank you!!! We’ve made it to Wednesday! I’m happy to report that we’re all still going strong! :) Today in math, we reviewed all of our new learning as it relates to geometry, and had some fun at Geometry Park. I don't want to give away too many details, but I will tell you this - click here to listen a song that will be stuck in your head for hours, and be sure to ask your child how this song (and powerpoint) helped them remember geometric shapes! As a friendly reminder, please make sure you’re practicing the multiplication flashcards with your child at home. Students need to be able to answer these facts fluently - PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! :) Finally, students continued to work hard on their writing for our Persuasive Writing Unit. Today, we focussed on the different types of leads we can use as writers to hook our readers (setting lead, sound lead, question lead, imagine lead, right to the point lead, etc). Students used their Writer's Notebooks to practice writing each of these types of leads... they were hilarious and a lot of fun to share as a class. Be sure to ask your child what their favorite type of lead is! Mr. Pastiglione |
