Happy Tuesday! I hope you're all enjoying this beautiful weather - I couldn't get enough of it over the weekend! This week in math, students kicked off their 5-day Vacation project. Working in groups of three, students are working together to solve the BIG question - "How much does a 5day vacation cost for you and your group members?" They're responsible for picking a destination, calculating the total mileage from Voorheesville to their chosen city, how much it will cost them to drive there based on current gas prices, and how many hours it will take them to get there - and that's just the start!!! Be sure to ask your third grader all about their 5-day vacation, where they're staying, and what they're eating . . . I overheard a couple students mention Oreo ice cream sundaes for breakfast - hahaha! This afternoon in Social Studies, we joined our third grade buddies in Miss Newkirk's class for a little Rain Forest Animal Riddle fun! :) Students worked with their social studies partners to come up with riddles for the animals they're researching for their animal research project. Lets just say the riddles were AWESOME! Students had to draw a picture of their animal on the inside of a piece of construction paper and fold the paper so only a SMALL portion of the animal was showing. They then had to write down 3 clues for students to use to help them guess their correct animal - Miss Newkirk and I were both extremely impressed with what students came up with - great job!

Yesterday, students learned all about asparagus as part of the Voorheesville Farm to School Initiative's "Good Eats" healthy snack program! Students learned that asparagus can be green, white, or purple, and that they are packed with f_____ and Vitamin _! AND, it was our first session held in the Blackbird Paradise (our school garden). Students observed the asparagus bed, and will continue to observe it throughout the remainder of the school year to watch the growth progress! I unfortunately was unable to make it, so a big thank you to Mrs. Wight for passing these pictures along to me! For more information visit Voorheesville F2S! First things first - Happy Birthday to . . . Bryce turned 9-years old today. . . wooo-hoooooo!!!! A big thank you to Mrs. Jones - she was kind enough to bring in chocolate chip cookies for our entire class! Happy Birthday, Bryce - hope you have a great day! Happy Monday & Happy Earth Day! I hope you all had a relaxing weekend. :) We kicked off our week by reading The Lorax, by Dr. Seuss, and discussing ways we can help the earth - not just today, but everyday! Third graders also wrote about how they would help our earth if they were the Lorax! I even snapped some silly pics of students holding up The Lorax mustache - very fun! Be sure to look for them in the 2/3 hallway - they'll be posted above cubbies! Friday's mystery reader was . . . Jack's mom!!! Mrs. Keith visited our classroom and read not one but two awesome books! The first book she read was Diary of a Fly by Doreen Cronin. And the book is just that - the diary... of a fly and her dream to become a superhero! Students LOVED it! The second book Mrs. Keith read was, Kindness is Cooler, Mrs. Ruler, by Margery Cuyler. What a great book this is, with such a great message - kindness is cool! I had never heard of this book before yesterday, but I already ordered it off of www.amazon.com to add to my classroom library! Thanks Mrs Keith for being our mystery reader! As you know, yesterday was our performance of Mice from Outer Space. I am so incredibly proud of all our third graders for all of their hard work over the past couple of months. It really showed in BOTH of their performances yesterday - and EVERYONE noticed! A HUGE thank you to Mrs. Beauregard for all of the time and effort she put into the show as well! BRAVO to all!!!! You were AMAZING! The Bad Cat a.k.a. Thanks to Miss Abelseth, our Science Lab teacher for taking this silly video clip!
Mrs. Peek and Leo!!! What an exciting day for our third graders! Mrs. Peek stopped by for a visit this morning after round one of the ELAs! Students had the chance to meet her newest addition, Leo! They also had the opportunity to ask Mrs. Peek 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 questions and tell her all about their lives since she left to have baby Leo! It was funny - I reminded students that she would be visiting this morning and they were SO excited and couldn't wait to see her! The second she walked in - silence!! You could hear a pin drop! They eventually warmed up once they realized it was indeed Mrs. Peek and not some alien impersonating her! :) Thanks for the visit Mrs. Peek and Leo!
Rachel Pahl and Hannah Rudolph!!! Rachel and Hannah's science fair experiment, "Adventures of the Electroscope" was chosen for special recognition at the 2013 Voorheesville Elementary School Science Fair. The scientist in attendance commented that Rachel and Hannah demonstrated "Lots of enthusiasm" and that "The project showed excellent scientific curiosity!" Congratulations to you both, and to all our third grade friends who participated!
Can you believe it's already April 12th?? It's hard to believe we have just over 2 months of school left! I hope you all had a relaxing April break. From what I was told in our Monday morning meeting, it sounds as though everyone had a FANTASTIC vacation! Mine was awesome - I didn't do much, which was exactly what I was hoping for. I spent some quality time with my family, took Pax on a bunch of hikes, and visited with some childhood friends. Sometimes, a vacation with no agenda is the best type of vacation! On to our week - Today's mystery reader was . . . Connor's Mom!!! Mrs. Smith read two of my favorite books - Strega Nona, by Tomie dePaola and Memoirs of a Goldfish, by Devin Scillian. Listening to Strega Nona and all about her magic pasta pot made me VERY hungry for my mother's pasta! Memoirs of a Goldfish is about a goldfish who is content living in his bowl all by himself . . . until it begins to fill with some unwanted company! There is a cute twist at the end - be sure to ask your third grader about it! Thanks Mrs. Smith for being our mystery reader today! Earlier in the week, we visited with our first grade reading buddies in Mrs. Molloy's class! Mrs. Molloy put together this colorful activity where students made rainbows and wrote poems in the clouds! Check out the pics below! This week in Science Lab, students learned all about seeds and beans. Third graders had an opportunity to examine a number of different beans and seeds to "see" what was inside of them, and even had the opportunity to dissect one! Science Lab is always so hands-on for students which is why I always enjoy observing them during this time! As you know, we also began our unit on Liquid Volume and Mass in math! Students have been learning all about cups, pints, quarts, gallons, liters, milliliters, grams, killograms, ounces, pounds, and tons! Below is one of the activities students completed this week - CAPACITY MAN/WOMAN/BABY!!! And finally, Happy Birthday to . . . ME and to my twin sister, Kristen as well! ![]() A BIG thank you to all my amazing third graders and their parents for the AWESOME birthday cards, gifts, and birthday celebration, which was a complete surprise to me! I couldn't ask for a better group of kids AND parents to be working with! You definitely made my 31st birthday, one I will remember always! :) Thanks to Mrs. Wight for the delicious cupcakes pictured above! Enjoy the pictures I've posted below - I'm sure you will get a BIG laugh out of some of the costumes... I mean outfits my mother dressed us in! !!! :) Happy vacation from Pax!! If you have any pictures from your vacation and would like to share them on the blog, send me an email with the pictures attached, and I'll upload them!!! Below are some pictures Sophie's mom emailed to me of Sophie and her friends at Taylor Park over April break in Milburn, New Jersey! It looks like they're having a great time! Thanks for sharing! |
