When solving word problems, we follow a step by step process to help us along. I thought it would be helpful to share the steps with you all as you provide such wonderful homework support.
Step 1: Read the problem at least two times. Ask, Do I understand what it is asking me?
Step 2 Determine if you are trying to find the whole (addition & multiplication) or the part (subtraction & division).
Step 3 Restate the problem at the bottom of the page in your own sentence. For example, if the question asks how many stickers does Karen have left, the student might write: Karen has _______ stickers left.
Step 4 Solve the problem using modeled drawing. We have spent some time using modeled drawing in our guided math groups. I also stumbled upon a wonderful website that provides modeled drawing practice (see below).
Step 5 Use an equation to solve the problem
Step 6 Ask yourself, Does my answer make sense? Is it reasonable?
Step 7 Fill in your blank sentence with the answer
Today we spent some time in computer lab exploring the site: http://www.thinkingblocks.com/. This site allows children to work with modeled drawing concepts. Modeled drawing helps students begin to learn mathematical relationships as well as known and unknown quantities. Seeing the word problem visually helps students organize information and simplify the process. I suggest exploring the site with your child. Begin my clicking the "addition" tab. Next, start with the easier problems (the computer will automatically set it there). As your child develops confidence and/or completes 5 problems with ease, the site will suggest moving on to more challenging problems. The great thing about the program is you can start as basic or as challenging as you wish.
The children have found great success with modeled drawing in their guided math groups and this website allows more practice organizing and understanding the information at hand. Some of the math can be done mentally but for challenging problems, your child can complete necessary equations with pen/paper or there is also a calculator option. Happy exploring mathematicians!
