A girl named Opal lived with her dad, who was a preacher. He was very sad because Opal's mom ran off. One day, Opal found a stray dog at the store Winn-Dixe and named her Winn-Dixe. She showed her dad and he said "okay" to Opal keeping her. Opal went to the library and meet Amanda and Mrs. Frannie Block. Then she goes to the pet store for Winn-Dixe and meets Otis the sad guitar player. Otis is sad because he is put into jail for playing his music on the street. He loves his guitar very much and nothing can stop him from playing his guitar.
I do recommend this book because the theme is friendship and kindness and that is a great theme. This book has sad parts but also a lot of action. Although Opal never saw her mom she has a lot of friends that care about her. And she also has her dad, the preacher. I think that is why this book was a Caldecott Award winner. Give it a try today!
